<p>Autonomous cars promise to revolutionise the way we get from place to place. No group was poised to benefit more from this new technology than the 36 million blind or 217 million visually impaired people. Autonomous vehicles have the capacity to change the lives of people who previously would not have been able to travel in a car by themselves.</p>

<p>Since that video was published, blind and visually impaired people have been increasingly pushed to the side, or ignored entirely in the design phase of autonomous cars. Last year, the National Federation of the Blind in the US warned that it would be &ldquo;exploitation&rdquo; if autonomous systems were not made accessible for blind people. Nissan and Toyota claim they are committed to accessibility, but currently haven&rsquo;t confirmed they&rsquo;re involving blind people in their autonomous vehicle design or testing.</p>
<p>If the cars are designed without blind or visually impaired people in mind, or without direct input from them, the cars won&rsquo;t be able to address their needs.</p>
<h2><strong>Why Autonomous Vehicles Are So Important To The Blind</strong></h2>
<p>Losing the ability to drive can increase isolation for blind people, and that loss of independence can be difficult to deal with. If utilised correctly, this technology could help give people back control over how they get from place to place, without relying on someone else.</p>
<p>New software is being developed parallel to autonomous vehicle technology, that will allow people to speak and interact with a system that will act as a &lsquo;guide&rsquo; that could be placed in autonomous cars or on phones. <p>Currently, all &lsquo;drivers&rsquo; at the wheel of an autonomous vehicle will still need to hold a valid driver&rsquo;s license, despite the fact that in theory no driving will actually take place. Visually impaired people cannot hold a driver&rsquo;s licence, so under current laws would not able to utilise this new technology.</p>

<p>With over 100 years of rich history and significant advancements since the 1900 Gordon Bennet Cup, motorsport has created thousands of champions and inspired millions of fans across the globe. <h3><strong>6. Jaguar Winning Le Mans 1953</strong></h3>

Whilst the previous fastest cars on the track had been the Chrysler Hemi&ndash;powered Cunningham C-5R &ndash; &lsquo;the Smiling Shark&rsquo; &ndash; and the V-12 Ferrari.</p>

<p>Dominating the first decade in F1 history as a five-time winner of the World Drivers' Championship, Juan Manuel Fangio emerged victorious throughout major injuries, several near-death experiences and extreme weather conditions. <p>The birth of Formula E in 2011 aimed to tackle one of the industry&rsquo;s biggest problems. Designed to push forward sustainability in the sport, with the overall aim &lsquo;to reduce our carbon footprint and have a positive impact on both people and the planet&rsquo;, the series divided opinion at the 2014 inaugural championship in Beijing. Fans missed the iconic sounds and faster speeds of traditional races and felt that some excitement was missing from the green F1 alternative.</p>

<p>Formula E has itself changed rapidly in its first few years. 2018&rsquo;s season five introduced the Gen2 car with greater power and range, completely removing the need for pit stops and car changes. Recent series have seen changes to race format and significant improvements to driver safety.</p>
<p>The series is poised to become even more exciting in the coming years, with Mercedes-Benz and Porsche lined up for 2019-2020, and further innovation to enhance speed and fan enjoyment set to be announced.</p>

<p>Analytics is an important skill, as it allows for engineers to see patterns, paths to success, or imagine new design concepts, instead of being overwhelmed by huge amounts of data. Being able to cut through the noise and look at what matters is a skill that can take years to hone, but it is necessary for making winning decisions.</p>

What It Takes To Work In F1

<p>F1 is a sport of extremes: incredible speed, larger than life characters, and cutting-edge cars. In almost every race there are amazing moments that encapsulate why so many people love the sport, dramatic battles for the podium, epic rivalries, or even explosive emotional outbursts from drivers.</p>
<p>With so much excitement packed into every race, and over seven decades of the sport to choose from, it&rsquo;s difficult to pick just five of the biggest and best moments from Formula One&rsquo;s history, but we&rsquo;ve tried our best to pick moments that capture the drama, spectacle, and spirit of the sport.</p>
<h2>Top F1 moments of all time</h2>
<h3>Lewis Hamilton winning the 2008 British Grand Prix</h3>
<p>Lewis Hamilton has an amazing record for championship wins, with seven World Drivers Championships to his name.</p>
<p>But Hamilton won his first British Grand Prix all the way back in 2008, and has been a household name in the sport ever since.</p>
<p>He had said there were only two races he truly wanted to win during his career: the British Grand Prix and the Monaco Grand Prix.</p>
<p>Hamilton managed to achieve both of these impressive wins in only his second year as a professional Formula One racer.</p>
<p>At the British Grand Prix, after 60 laps, Hamilton crossed the finish line 14 seconds ahead of the racer in second place, Rubens Barrichello, and over a minute ahead of Nick Heidfeld, who came in third.</p>
<p>He credited the win to the wet weather. While other drivers weren&rsquo;t used to such conditions, after the race Hamilton said:&nbsp;&ldquo;Racing here as a kid it was always wet, so it was a real good area for me to show my strengths. I loved that race, it was so much fun.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Hamilton&rsquo;s incredible racing and determination led him to take the Grand Prix, as well as being named the F1 Drivers Champion at the end of the 2008 season.</p>
<h3>Ending of the 1971 Italian Grand Prix</h3>
<p>The 1971 Italian Grand Prix saw the closest-ever finish in F1: British driver Peter Gethin beating Ronnie Peterson across the finishing line by just 0.01 seconds. The top five racers &ndash; Gethin, Peterson, Francois Cevert, Mike Hailwood, and Howden Ganley &ndash; were all across the finish line within 0.61 seconds.</p>
<p>Having started the last lap in fourth place, Gethin decided to push his engine to the limit, and beyond, later saying:&nbsp;&ldquo;The rev limit was 10,500 rpm, but I took it to 11,500 before snatching top gear, figuring that the bugger would probably blow apart &ndash; but if it didn&rsquo;t I&rsquo;d win!"</p>
<p>His average speed of 150.754mph around a lap remains one of the fastest in F1 history. This was Gethin&rsquo;s only win, but what a stunning victory it was.</p>
<h3>Nigel Mansell&rsquo;s 1992 Grand Prix Championship win at Silverstone</h3>
<p>Nigel Mansell had a legendarily successful season in 1992. At the ninth round of the 1992 F1 British Grand Prix, Nigel Mansell won the 59-lap race for team Williams-Renault, leading every lap from start to finish.</p>
<p>Thousands of fans came in to watch the race, and the crowd rushed the tracks and flooded onto the circuit to celebrate with Mansell when the race was over.</p>
<h3>The 2011 Canadian Grand Prix</h3>
<p>The chaos-filled 2011 Canadian Grand Prix is a sure contender for one of the best F1 moments, being the longest F1 race on record at four hours, four minutes, and 39 seconds.</p>
<p>Jenson Button was in last place, having had six pitstops, and a collision with his teammate Lewis Hamilton, and still had 30 laps to go. In wet weather, with a huge gap between him and first place, no one would have believed he could go on to win.</p>
<p>When the rain stopped, and the track began to dry, Button began rapidly gaining positions. Within ten laps of the race restarting, Jenson Button had already made his way to tenth place.</p>
<p>There were other collisions and crashes which allowed Button to move into the lead with half a lap to the finish line. In a 70-lap race, Button ended up leading by just half a lap, having clawed his way to victory from the very bottom of the pack.</p>
<h3>Lauda surviving his crash at the 1976 German Grand Prix</h3>
<p>Following a horrific accident at the 1976 German Grand Prix, Lauda was trapped in his burning car. He would not have survived if it hadn&rsquo;t been for the bravery of fellow drivers Arturo Merzario, Guy Edwards, Harald Ertl, and Brett Lunger, who was also involved in the crash. They pulled him from the wreckage, but he was badly burned and had inhaled a lot of smoke.</p>
<p>He fell into a coma and was not expected to survive. According to Lauda, he heard a priest reading him the last rites, and this gave him the strength to keep fighting for life.</p>
<p>Astonishingly, just six weeks later, he was back in his Ferrari.</p>

Best Formula One Drivers of All Time

<p>Martin Donnelly was a racing driver in Formula 3, Formula 3000, and eventually Formula One, until a serious crash ended his racing career.</p>
<p>In 1988, Donnelly was the test driver for the Lotus Formula One racing team. A year later, he substituted for Arrows driver Derek Warwick in the French Grand Prix, impressing many throughout the sport.</p>
<p>In 1990, Lotus brought him on as a fully-fledged race driver. During a practice session at the Jerez circuit, Donnelly suffered an almost-fatal crash, resulting in brain and lung contusions, and severe leg fractures. The car collided with the race barrier at 167 mph, exploding into pieces and sending Martin across the track still attached to his seat. Everyone watching thought Martin had died. The thing that saved him was the lightweight design of the car he&rsquo;d been driving &ndash; modified to accommodate a V12 engine.</p>
<p>He was alive, but barely. Soon after the crash his kidneys and lungs shutdown due to shock. He was kept on a respirator for six weeks, needed dialysis for a month, and was eventually kept in a medically-induced coma.</p>
<p>Once we woke up and was able to move again, Martin was determined to race again. It wouldn&rsquo;t be easy. After being in hospital for so long, he&rsquo;d lost a lot of weight, and couldn&rsquo;t walk. After three years of intensive physiotherapy, he met with a surgeon to discuss the possibility of racing again. That surgeon had to break the news to Martin that he would never race again.</p>
<p>According to Martin, that was one of the hardest moments of his life. The crash wasn&rsquo;t his fault, the car had suffered suspension failure, yet suddenly he found himself in immense pain, with a worthless contract he&rsquo;d signed the morning before the crash, and dreams of a career in motorsport in ruins.</p>
<p>However, seeing his friend and racer Aryton Senna die in a similar crash in 1994 made him realise that he was lucky to be alive, and that perhaps he should focus his talents and energy somewhere else. While he is still involved with the sport, Martin is just happy to be alive and able to spend time with his family.</p>
<p>Formula One is much safer today thanks to innovations that came about as a direct result of this crash.</p>
<h1><strong>How Did Martin Donnelly&rsquo;s Crash Change Formula One?</strong></h1>
<p>The crash was so severe that it prompted a redesign on the Jerez track. The corner where he suffered his crash was turned into a much slower curve, and tracks are now designed with safety in mind.</p>
<p>Smart car design can save lives, and after the crash designers began to build cars that were first and foremost safe to use.</p>
<p>Luckily, Martin managed to survive and now helps coach drivers as a Racing Instructor with Lotus, and has even raced several times in the years since his crash.</p>

<p>Martin&rsquo;s crash made those involved with the sport realise things had to change. Now all cars have significantly improved protection, and are made out of materials designed to absorb high levels of impact.</p>
<p>Nowadays cockpits are designed with carbon fibre and Zylon, the same materials used in bullet-proof vests. Over the last thirty year motorsport engineers have worked hard to design new ways to improve safety, and safe lives.</p>

Who Is Martin Donnelly And Why Is He So Important To Formula 1?

<p>Safety has always been a top priority for motorsport. In 1981 McLaren revolutionised Formula One by creating the first race car out of carbon fibre: the MP 4/1. Thanks to its lightweight design, it would go on to win at the British Grand Prix. This new design also helped save the life of driver John Watson during a crash at the Italian Grand Prix. The car was ripped in half, abut he emerged relatively unscathed.</p>
<p>The rest of the industry took notice, and within the space of a single season carbon fibre monocoques became the standard. Nowadays roughly 75% of the car will be made with carbon fibre.</p>
<h2><strong>What Is Carbon Fibre?</strong></h2>
<p>Carbon fibre is made up of tiny strands of carbon atoms 5-10 microns in diameter. It can be woven together into a fabric, or a solid structure.</p>
<p>Besides being a staple material in motorsport, it is also used to create airplane parts, bike frames, tennis rackets, and propeller blades.</p>

<p>Carbon fibre is strong, durable, and lightweight, making it a perfect material to construct vehicles out of. It&rsquo;s five times stronger than steel, making it perfect for use in the motorsport industry.</p>
<h3><strong>Lightweight for Better Fuel Economy</strong></h3>
<p>Vehicles in motorsport generally need to be as light as possible to ensure optimal fuel efficiency. Carbon fibre is perfect for this, it&rsquo;s stronger than most metals while being considerably lighter.</p>
<h2><strong>Other Materials In Motorsport</strong></h2>
<p>Most materials in motorsport are polymeric. This means they&rsquo;re made of polymers, molecules that have many repeating links. We can design and manufacture polymers to fulfil specific criteria. The first manufactured polymer was Bakelite, created in 1907. Since then we&rsquo;ve gone on to create many more polymers that can be used for anything from textiles to space travel.</p>
<p>Artificial polymers are often designed for maximum strength. They can also be resistant to chemicals, handle heat very well, and be moulded to fit almost any shape. Some polymeric materials used in motorsport are Zylon, aramids, and polyethylene filaments.</p>
<h3><strong>Zylon</strong></h3>
<p>Zylon is the world&rsquo;s strongest man-made fibre, 1.6 times tougher than Kevlar. It&rsquo;s made of chains of rigid molecules.</p>
<p>In Formula 1, Zylon tethers connect the wheels to the chassis, and Zylon panels protect the cockpit in the event of a crash.</p>
<h3><strong>Aramids</strong></h3>
<p>Aramids are heat-resistant synthetic fibres. The most well-known aramid is Kevlar which is used to create&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.v-hr.com/blog/how-technology-is-changing-infantry" target="_blank" rel="noopener">body armour</a>.</p>
<p>Aramids can be used in the construction of the suits the drivers have to wear, which must be as tough as the car itself. Racing suits are lightweight and heat-resistant to ensure safety in the event of a fire. The suits are tested in a laboratory in temperatures ranging from 400 to 800 degrees Celsius.</p>
<h3><strong>Polyethylene Filaments</strong></h3>
<p>Dyneema and Spectra are two polyethylene filaments that can be woven with carbon fibre to make highly resistant materials.</p>
<p>Dyneema is fifteen times stronger than steel, yet is light enough to float on water. It&rsquo;s used in the safety belts, ensuring the highest level of protection for the drivers.</p>

<p>In the winter of 1902, Mary Anderson was travelling through New York in a trolley car. It was snowing, and the driver had to keep reaching out of the window to wipe the snow off the windscreen by hand.</p>
<p>She began to think of a way that would allow the driver to stay within the car, while also removing snow from the windshield.</p>
<p>Her initial invention was a manually operated device, which allowed the driver to use a lever to clean the windshield with a rubber blade.</p>

<p>At first, Mary struggled to find interest in her invention, as many people believed it would just distract drivers.</p>
<p>At the start of the 20<sup>th</sup>&nbsp;century, most cars didn&rsquo;t go fast enough to warrant windshields, and safety didn&rsquo;t become a concern until the middle of the century when millions of people began to buy their own cars.</p>
<p>Despite patenting her invention, it was forgotten until the patent lapsed in 1920. In 1922, Cadillac adopted her invention, including it as standard in their car designs. Nowadays it is a legal requirement for all cars to have windshield wipers. They are also used on airplanes, buses, trains, and even some spacecraft.</p>
<p>Mary was posthumously inducted into the National Engineer&rsquo;s Hall of Fame in 2011 for her invention.</p>

<p>Modern windshield wipers move incredibly fast, powered by an electric motor with a worm gear, which can multiply the torque of the motor by about 50 times. Windscreen wipers are designed to wipe 1.5 million times in their lifetimes.</p>

<p>Over the next two decades the UK Government will slowly phase out diesel-powered vehicles, and petrol-powered cars soon after. This is in part to combat air pollution which in some cities is reaching critically dangerous levels. London has been found to be in violation of World Health Organisation limits on&nbsp;<u><a href="https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/oct/04/revealed-every-londoner-breathing-dangerous-levels-of-toxic-air-particle" target="_blank" rel="noopener">harmful pollutant PM2.5</a></u>, so reducing car pollution is paramount.</p>
<p>Phasing out diesel cars will also reduce carbon emissions produced by the UK. However, the project is not as simple as replacing all petrol cars with electric ones: a large amount of changes will need to be made on a societal, legislative and infrastructural level before electrical vehicles can be adopted by the wider public.</p>
<p>Electric cars will need charging ports at home, as well as easy access to charging stations around cities and on motorways. This will take time and cost money, as the infrastructure needed will require significant planning, investment and implementation.</p>
<h1><strong>Why Electric Vehicles Will Need Changes To Infrastructure</strong></h1>
<p>Supporting millions more electric vehicles is feasible, but only if the UK invests &pound;30-80 billion in charging points for enough accessible energy for the entire population. Currently there is enough power in the grid to keep projected numbers charged and running, but not if all them attempt to charge at the same time.</p>
<p>Ofgem has already called for the nation&rsquo;s electric car users to charge during off-peak hours, which would increase the numbers of cars the grid could currently support by around 60%. Alternatively, a new technology called Vehicle to Grid (V2G) could allow vehicle owners to &lsquo;sell&rsquo; the energy stored in their batteries on to others who need it.</p>
<p>Distributing Energy Resource (DER) management systems can help regulate all aspects of utility operations and delivery and can make the entire grid more efficient. Utilising these systems would allow governments a greater degree of control over of the impacts of charging electric vehicles.</p>
<p>Beyond this, new power plants and more efficient grids would have to implemented in order to avoid localised power failures. A widespread switch to an estimated 20 million electric vehicles would see an increase of around 15% in power demand, potentially as high as 40% during peak times if overnight charging at home ports weren&rsquo;t done by the majority of the population.</p>
<p>By 2040 the UK will need between 1-2.5 million more charging points. Currently, there are only 17,000. More support is needed, both in terms of providing funding, and giving local governments the understanding they need to fully optimise the placement of charging stations.</p>
<p>One of the main reasons for such a drastic switch to electric power is the need to lower carbon emissions to combat global warming. The reasoning behind the shift should never be forgotten, as some are calling for fossil fuel power stations to provide the electricity for the new vehicles, which some experts claim would actually cause more pollution than the equivalent amount of petrol cars, thus entirely defeating the point.</p>

How Electric Vehicles Will Change Infrastructure

<p>The&nbsp;<u><a href="https://roborace.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Roborace</a></u>&nbsp;is the world&rsquo;s first racing championship featuring fully autonomous cars with no human drivers.</p>
<p>Created by Russian serial entrepreneur Denis Sverdlov, Roborace was officially announced in 2015, in partnership with&nbsp;<u><a href="https://blog.v-hr.com/blog/what-is-formula-e-and-what-does-it-mean-for-formula-one" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Formula E</a></u>. Sverdlov believes that the future of cars is electric, and autonomous. By pushing the technology forward in racing, it will become more mainstream, more efficient, and more likely to get widespread adoption.</p>
<h1><strong>How Will Roborace Work?</strong></h1>
<p>Sverdlov hopes to get ten working cars representing different teams, most likely high power automotive brands like in Formula 1. Powerful AI will be installed in the cars, which will be equipped with sensors to give it a type of awareness in real time as it moves around the track.</p>
<p>There are two radars, used for detecting objects in the distance, and LiDAR, which fires beams of light in multiple directions before using the reflections to work out where surrounding objects are. These are supplemented by 18 ultrasonic sensors used for close-range detection, two speed sensors and six cameras that use machine vision to give a 360&deg; view around the car. There&rsquo;s also a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), a form of GPS technology.</p>
<p>With Formula One, one of the major criticisms is that the winner is largely determined by who has the best car, not necessarily who is the best driver. With Roborace, the sophistication of the software will make the difference between who wins and who loses.</p>
<p>The sensors will be able to detect what&rsquo;s around it, with lightning fast reactions as the world around it changes. It makes decisions about when to speed up or overtake based upon the outcome of algorithms, which learn as they go.</p>
<p>In theory, this should mean that the AI in the cars becomes smarter and more flexible as the grand prix goes from race to race. More importantly, it might mean that the cars have some spectacular crashes in the early days of the championship. We&rsquo;ll see soon enough, with &lsquo;Season Alpha&rsquo; set to start as early as next year.</p>
<p>Currently it&rsquo;s believed that there will in fact be human drivers for one part of the race, and then full autonomy for the other. The &lsquo;full release&rsquo; is slated for a 2021 launch, which will feature the robocar, designed with no cockpit. Rumored to have 1000kw of power thanks to its four electric motors. It costs &pound;750,000 to build, with the AI system costing an extra &pound;250,000.</p>

<p>F1 is the fastest motorsport on the planet. Formula One cars move faster than 200 mph, accelerating to 60mph in under 2 seconds, generating around 1000 horsepower.</p>

That&rsquo;s why Formula One has one of the most sophisticated tracking systems in the world, working to have precise knowledge of where every car is during every second of the race.</p>
<h1><strong>How Formula One Is Timed</strong></h1>
<p>Transponders on F1 cars allow them to be tracked to within a ten thousandth of a second by transmitting radio waves. Formula One transponders are vital to keeping the race as accurate as possible, with the cars moving at such high speed, no other timing system is up to the task of tracking them.</p>
<p>Timing loops are set about a centimetre into the F1 track, built out of lengths of wire that run across the width of the track and back, and encased in silicone for protection. They&rsquo;re spaced out every 150 to 200 metres along the track, and every time a car passes over it registers with the car&rsquo;s transponder, transmitting a unique ID to a decoder that logs the time of day, giving an accurate picture of where the car is any point along the track and at what time.</p>
<p>Every Formula One transponder transmits on a different frequency so there&rsquo;s no interference. All this information is fed back to the broadcast centre, where the technical teams can review it.</p>
<h2><strong>Formula One Race Testing</strong></h2>
<p>Every morning before a Formula One race, a test F1 car is sent around the track to calibrate all the systems and ensure everything is working correctly. Multiple back ups ensure that even if loops are damaged there will still be enough data to say who won the race and by how much.</p>
<p>There is of course a loop on the finish line, with a second decoder system as a failsafe and a light beam that stretches across the track. When an F1 car drives past and breaks the beam, the time is recorded. It&rsquo;s powered by a separate source, so even if the entire system lost power, the beam would still be operational. The final F1 failsafe is a camera at the finish line, so even the beam was broken somehow, the camera would be able to visually confirm the winner.</p>
<p>Cameras aren&rsquo;t just at the finish line: every car must be fitted with at least five cameras: at the wing mirrors, the sides of the nose of the car, the side engine cover and the top of the air box. This allows for the constant transmission of video feeds to accurately gauge where the Formula One cars are in relation to one another.</p>

<p>One such supercar is the Bloodhound, currently being developed in Cornwall, England. Designed to go a thousand miles per hour, the concept has been described as part Formula One car, part jet engine.</p>

<p>The Bloodhound supercar will be powered by both a jet engine and a rocket, which will produce more than 135,000 horsepower, more than six times the combined horsepower of all the F1 cars on a starting grid. Half the thrust comes from this engine, which weighs a tonne and produces 9 tonnes of thrust, taking the car to 650 mph on its own. This engine was of course designed for a jet engine, not a car. Certain vehicle modifications ensure the engine shuts down if the digital control unit fails, and for the air intake to be pressure resistant to up to 1.7 Bar which equates to 26 pound-force per square inch.</p>
<h3>&middot; It Uses A Lot Of Fuel</h3>
<p>The Bloodhound supercar will need 400 litres of fuel and 800 litres of rocket oxidiser. The auxiliary power unit will pump 9 gallons of oxidiser to the rocket every second. This oxidiser is very reactive, so any car parts that might come into contact with it must be made out of non-reactive materials that have been effectively pickled in an acid bath to protect them.</p>
<p>The rocket is a hybrid design, using a combination of propellants to give it such incredible speed, emerging out of the rocket at 3,000 degrees.</p>
<p>Now almost fully constructed, the Bloodhound Project team is seeking a &pound;25 million investment to see the project through to completion. The final attempt would be made at a specifically-made track in South Africa.</p>

<h1><strong>How Lotus Changed Motorsport</strong></h1>
<p>Visionary Automotive engineer Colin Chapman (1928-1982) founded&nbsp;<a href="http://www.lotuscars.com/engineering/about-lotus-engineering" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lotus Engineering Co., Ltd</a>. in 1952. A key influencer to the Motorsport industry, Chapman evidences that passion, creativity and sheer willpower can triumph over wealth and prestige.</p>
<p>In an industry then dominated by powerhouses like Ferrari and Maserati, Chapman spearheaded the designs that would become essential to the sport we know and love.</p>

<p>He had a background in both the aviation and metal industries &ndash; he was<a href="http://www.grandprixhistory.org/chap_bio.htm">&nbsp;a flying officer with the RAF&nbsp;a</a>nd worked at the British Aluminum Company. This provided him invaluable insight into aerodynamic forces and chassis constitution for racing cars.</p>
<p>Chapman championed a minimalistic philosophy with the core belief that, "<a href="http://www.lotuscars.com/about-us/lotus-philosophy">Adding power makes you faster on the straights &ndash; Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere."</a> Whilst the big names in Automotive, including Ferrari, were aiming for more powerful machines, Chapman focused on simplifying the car structure, removing unnecessary parts and maximising functionality.</p>
<p>Champan&rsquo;s Lotus was born through losing as much weight as possible, experimenting with light yet hard composite materials and using his aerodynamic expertise to decrease drag and air resistance, especially whilst cornering.</p>
<p>Chapman&rsquo;s aerodynamic inventions to generate downforce (and keep the car on the ground while turning) include front wings for the Lotus 49B and removing the radiators from the front of the car (while placing them on the sides) to decrease resistance and concentrate the overall weight of the machine on its centre.</p>
<p>Lotus applied&nbsp;<a href="https://www.motorsport.com/f1/video/main-gallery/ground-effect-lotus-incredible-discovery-that-revolutionised-f1-43413/">&lsquo;the ground effect&rsquo;</a>, making use of venturis and sliding skirts to maintain high pressure over the car and low pressure underneath, increasing stability during turning. Chapman&rsquo;s ideas remain essentials of Motorsport engineering even today.</p>
<p>Chapman&rsquo;s &ldquo;Weight first, Power second&rdquo; philosophy introduced the monocoque chassis (a composite of fiberglass never previously used on racing cars) for the Lotus Elite and Lotus 25. The chassis evolved into an aluminum monocoque used for the Lotus 29 which competed at Indianapolis in 1962.</p>
<p>Chapman transformed Automotive techniques for producing car chassis and his method remains the standard procedure to this day (using carbon fiber instead of aluminum). Champan&rsquo;s genius can also be credited with Formula One advertising and sponsorship: Chapman first secured a tobacco sponsor for his car in 1968.</p>
<p>Champan&rsquo;s Lotus 7 best represents his engineering principles. The Lotus 7 was the starting point of Chapman&rsquo;s success in Motorsport and since 1957 has been reproduced several times by a variety of car manufacturers. Today, a model of the Lotus 7 is still produced by British manufacturer Caterham Cars. <p>Formula 1 is one of the most popular sports in the world, with an iconic racetrack: Silverstone.&nbsp;</p>
<h1><em>&nbsp;</em><br><strong>What Makes Silverstone So Special?</strong></h1>
<h3><u>Brooklands</u></h3>
<p>The legendary modified Silverstone race track &ndash; described by F1 Drivers as &lsquo;<a href="http://www.silverstone.co.uk/events/2017-formula-1-british-grand-prix/">insanely fast&rsquo;</a>&nbsp;&ndash; has hosted the Grand Prix since 1987, but the event was originally based at the very first purpose-built motor racing venue, Brooklands. The concrete Brooklands oval was built in 1907 in Surrey, just outside of London. World War II saw Brooklands heavily damaged and eventually the circuit was abandoned. Following the demise of Brooklands, numerous British racing circuits were built on disused RAF airfields, with Silverstone in Northamptonshire the most notable. Silverstone held its first race, the Royal Automobile Club International Grand Prix on 2<sup>nd</sup>&nbsp;October 1948.</p>
<h3><u>Aintree</u></h3>
<p>1955 marked the change of the Formula One circuit. From 1955 until 1962, Silverstone and the Aintree Circuit were alternated yearly: the even-numbered years were reserved for Silverstone and the odd-numbered years for Aintree. Aintree&rsquo;s last race was held in 1962 before it was decommissioned in 1964, whilst Silverstone remained a popular favourite.</p>
<h3><u>Brands Hatch</u></h3>
<p>The early 1960&rsquo;s and mid-1980&rsquo;s saw circuits alternated between the now iconic Silverstone and Southern English circuit, Brands Hatch. Silverstone hosted the British Grand Prix in odd-numbered years and Brands Hatch in even-numbered years. Unlike Silverstone and Aintree, the cambered corners and elevation change of Brands Hatch made the circuit very popular among drivers.</p>
<h3><u>1987</u></h3>
<p>The Silverstone evolution emerged in 1987: the circuit was heavily modified with a new left-right chicane on the Farm Straight just before Woodcote. Another chicane was installed at the flat-out Abbey corner and Stowe corner was slowed considerably, however it was reverted to its previous design in 1966.<br><br></p>
<h3><u>Present Day</u></h3>
<p>The 2008 announcement that Donington Park had won the contract to host the British Grand Prix meant that the future of Silverstone was at risk. However, Donington failed to secure the necessary funding and in November 2009 the contract was terminated. Two months later, Silverstone signed a 17-year contract to host the British Grand Prix from 2010, securing its future until 2019. The History of Silverstone 

<p>Born in a Serbian village, Tesla changed the world forever with his Alternating Current (AC), bringing electricity and light to all corners of the Earth. He established&nbsp;<a href="http://www.teslasociety.com/ac.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><u>the essential frame for electrical generation and distribution</u></a>&nbsp;in modern economy, still in use today.</p>
<h2><strong>Nikola Tesla: A Born Engineer</strong></h2>
<p>According to legend, Nikola Tesla was born in a Serbian village at midnight during an electrical storm which made his mother claim:&nbsp;<a href="http://www.iflscience.com/technology/10-fun-facts-you-may-not-have-known-about-nikola-tesla/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><u>&lsquo;He will be a child of light&rsquo;</u></a>. At the age of three, Tesla felt electricity for the first time by stroking the back of his cat and the experience fascinated him. By the age of six, he had designed his first rotating engine with whatever elements he could find in his garden. The young boy wanted to use the forces of nature to power mankind, and as a student in Austria would openly argue with his teachers who believed that Alternating Current was not possible. Young Tesla became so obsessed that he quit school and spent the next four years searching for an answer.</p>
<p>What exactly is Alternating Current? In the 19<sup>th</sup>&nbsp;Century Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, powered by Direct Current (DC) which transmitted energy and electricity. However, as DC relies on a power generator to send electrons through a wire in one direction, the resistance within the wire caused energy loss over time, and therefore could not power large geographical areas.</p>
<p>To power large areas and long distances required many generators positioned next to each other. Expensive and impractical, electricity could not yet be used in the way we do today. Edison&rsquo;s engine worked using the friction from two pieces of metal to create sparks, which became electricity; however, this same friction caused resistance and wasted energy. Edison was unable to find a solution.</p>
<p>Only Nikola Tesla found the answer. He claimed the idea of Alternating Current hit him in an instant, out of nowhere and in a flash. He proceeded to modify the DC motor by adding a copper cylinder in the middle that was separated from a larger metal ring. Sending current through the outer ring, he turned both parts into magnets, and by isolating the interaction of magnetic forces he was able to spin the inner cylinder.</p>
<p>For the first time energy could be transmitted without loss of power. In Tesla&rsquo;s model, the electrons travelled in more than one direction by vibrating back and forth. Alternating Current was discovered in 1882, two years before Nikola Tesla met Thomas Edison.</p>
<h2><strong>Tesla's Engineering Success</strong></h2>
<p>In 1884 Tesla arrived in New York to work for the Edison Company, where he met his hero. However, after only 6 months he left a broken man. Edison, while inventive, was more of a businessman than a scientist: he created technologies for the sole purpose of selling them, which didn&rsquo;t sit well with the budding engineer&rsquo;s views.</p>
<p>Edison deemed AC impractical for business, leaving Tesla to dig ditches in the streets of New York for the next two years, with no one willing to finance his ideas. However, history gave Tesla the last laugh: in 1888, George Westinghouse took a chance and funded Nikola Tesla&rsquo;s research and technology. When Westinghouse bought Tesla&rsquo;s patents, both men became rich and achieved enormous success. In time,&nbsp;<a href="http://mentalfloss.com/article/30140/acdc-tesla%E2%80%93edison-feud" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><u>AC became so successful that it ended Edison&rsquo;s DC business</u></a>.</p>
<p>In 1893 Tesla and Westinghouse powered the Colombian Exposition in Chicago. With only 12 dynamos, the exposition generated three times more energy than the whole city of Chicago. &nbsp;Months later the two won the contract to install generators in the Niagara Falls, creating enough energy to light up the whole north east of the USA.</p>
<p>Tesla became a universal star and, despite the inability to prove more radical ideas including a tower to communicate with Martians and taking photographs of thoughts, his inventions proved vital to the engineering industry of today. Nikola Tesla was the first to imagine and produce the technology that enables us to use the internet, Wi-Fi, mobile phones and satellites. Our advances in the Aerospace &amp; Aviation, Motorsport, Defence, Engineering and Marine industries would not be possible without the innovations of Tesla.</p>

<p>Please note – The concept of IR35 status for tax and national insurance is not changing, but how the IR35 status determination decision is made and how the rules applicable to that status are then applied is changing. IR35 was due to come into practice last year in April 2020 but due to the COVID-19 pandemic this was extended until April 2021. Video's may mention older dates but information remains the same.</p>
