Rise of the TP52s: New Super Series in Yacht Racing
With less than a month until the 2018 52 Super Series begins in Croatia, the first of the five regattas has raised more interest than ever before – thanks to the phenomenal popularity of the TP52 Class.
Sail Racing PalmaVela: 52 Super Series Performance Design
Yacht racing preparation reaches a crucial point this week in the 15th edition of the Sail Racing PalmaVela. A range of 52 Super Series teams will be participating, and seven of the nine new-built TP52 will make their racing debut on 23rd May.
Led by the New York Yacht Club, Team Sled’s yacht was the first to touch the water in New Zealand on February 15th and was training in Valencia last week, along with British team Alegre who also launched last week.
Italian team Azzurra launched their yacht on March 14th in Valencia and the sailing team have already completed several weeks of sea trials for the Sail Racing PalmaVela. American yacht racing teams Quantum Racing and Phoenix and Brazilian sailing team Onda – whose TP52 was launched from King Marine in Valencia late last week – are all designed by Botin Partners, while the new TP52 of German sailing team Platoon is designed by Vrolijk.
Ben Ainslie’s Land Rover BAR will compete with the Gladiator boat launched last year and hope to take advantage of the better preparation. French team Paprec Recyclage is the ninth yacht making up the ten TP52 teams to compete in the eight Box Rule class races between Thursday 3rd May and Sunday 6th May in Palma.
Luna Rossa and Provezza: New TP52s in the 52 Super Series
Luna Rossa’s TP52 will be launched imminently, although the Luna Rossa team will not compete in Sail Racing PalmaVela and will instead work together to share data with sister ship Azzurra. The last of the new TP52s will be the new Provezza, currently being built at Persico and designed by Vrolijk. The Turkish sailing team will race against time to be ready for the first TP52 regatta and their preparation, instead of racing in PalmaVela, will take place in Ancona, Italy, before sailing to Croatia.
Soaring Popularity in 52 Super Series
The announcement that the new AC75 for the 36th America’s Cup will be a 75-foot-high performance monohull boat encouraged America’s Cup challengers to participate in the 52 Super Series 2018 and offers yet another attraction. Land Rover BAR will collaborate with Gladiator team Luna Rossa and the historic New York Yacht Club in association with Quantum Racing will be the America’s Cup teams racing in the seventh edition of the world’s leading Grand Prix monohull circuit.
With nine new yachts, three America’s Cup teams and an exciting preseason at the Sail Racing PalmaVela, the 2018 52 Super Series yacht race will be the most exciting yet.
