Professional Development Blog: Data Analytics Development
Alex Giles – Chartered Institute of Management Accountants
1. What is Your Job Title?
I am currently a Principal Data Analyst. I joined VHR as a Data Analyst and am working my way towards becoming a Junior Management Accountant.
2. Tell Us Your Story
After I graduated from the University of Hertfordshire with a degree in Business Economics, I started work at property development firm Countrywide on a 3-day assignment – I ended up staying for three years as a Property and Market Analyst.
I then worked at global security company Brinks as a Business Analyst before taking some time off to go travelling. I visited 11 countries in total: the South-East Asia loop, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and the U.S. before joining VHR in July 2015.
3. Which Personal Development Qualification Are You Working Towards?
I’m currently studying the CIMA Professional Qualification with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. I chose CIMA over an ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) qualification because CIMA is more related to management accounting.
4. How Long Have You Been Studying for Your CIMA?
I have been studying for one year. The CIMA qualification takes four years to complete, so I have three years left. Before I started CIMA, I also studied SQL and VBA courses and attended CIMA conferences to build up my knowledge.
5. What Does Your CIMA Cover?
The CIMA qualification focuses on Management Accounting: I create reports based on financial and non-financial information for management to help with business decisions.
6. Why Did You Choose to Study CIMA?
I’m interested in how a business operates and interpreting data to aid in business planning. I chose CIMA because I wanted to gain more skills in this area and help VHR continue its path of high levels of business growth and success.
7. How Will CIMA Benefit Your Future Career?
1 in 4 CEOs are trained Accountants: senior management across industries have the confidence in Chartered Accountants because their background and knowledge provides valuable insight when making major business decisions.
The more experience I gain and exams I pass, the more my career will progress. My CIMA qualification and the skills and knowledge I acquire will give me the opportunity to show I am capable to become a Financial Controller and ultimately a Finance Director.
8. What Have You Learned So Far?
I have learned the importance of Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet & Cash Flow reports, and what management see as critical information. I have three quarters of my qualification left so I expect to learn a lot in the next three years.
