The America’s Cup Class AC75 Boat Concept has been unveiled today in a ground-breaking step forward for high performance, fully foiling monohull racing yachts.
Designed in four months by Emirates Team New Zealand and Luna Rossa, the America’s Cup Class AC75 designs aim to challenge even the most experienced sailors.
Although built for high performance, the boat designers had to accommodate for several safety and practicality concerns. The America’s Cup Class AC75 can right itself in the event of capsize with its twin canting T-foils, which are ballasted to provide righting-moment when sailing and roll stability at low speed. Both foils are canted right under the hull to provide natural roll stability and to allow the yacht to fit into a standard marina berth.
The new America’s Cup Class AC75 also incorporates sustainable technology, with the intention of encouraging other sailing classes and yachts to follow suit. The new class will be sailed in the 36th America’s Cup and preliminary regattas in 2019 & 2020.
America’s Cup Champion and Leader of Team New Zealand, Grant Dalton, comments: “Once foiling, the AC75 has the potential to be faster than an AC50 both upwind and downwind.”
The America’s Cup Class AC75 has the potential to change the face of performance racing. When combined with the rapid transition from classic boatbuilding to the dominance of superyachts, is the Marine industry poised for a new era of transformation?
